QUICK ANSWER

One squad, three linked jobs

A Mortar Squad is useful when its information, ammunition and gun stay connected. The published directory confirms Observer, Support and Gunner as the three roles; the exact firing values remain version-sensitive.

FIND & CONFIRM

Observer

Stay where you can read the fight. Mark a target that matters to the active objective, confirm the location and keep the crew informed when friendly troops move into danger.

SUSTAIN THE POSITION

Support

Bring the published supplies and ammunition-box equipment, protect the emplacement and keep the Gunner informed before the crew runs short or must relocate.

BUILD & ADJUST

Gunner

Use the mortar wrench recorded in the role catalogue, choose workable ground, align on the mark and make controlled corrections instead of firing continuously at stale information.

EMPLACEMENT SETUP

Build for a fire mission, not for the view

  • Ask Support to stay close enough to sustain the weapon before placing it.
  • Use firm, reasonably flat ground with room to operate and leave quickly.
  • Keep overhead cover, nearby structures and exposed silhouettes in mind.
  • Choose a position that can support the active objective without sitting on its busiest spawn route.

PLACEMENT FAILURE

If the blueprint will not place

  • Move away from pits, steep slopes, rocks, roots and tight structures.
  • Check that the Gunner has the correct wrench or mortar equipment selected.
  • Confirm the Support player and required resources are present.
  • Try open ground nearby before assuming the emplacement is bugged.

These are conservative troubleshooting steps. Exact cost, radius and team limits are intentionally withheld until captured in the current build.

FIRE MISSION

Use a repeatable five-call loop

01

Request

Observer states target type, location and why it matters.

02

Confirm

Gunner repeats the mark; Observer checks friendly positions and approves the first round.

03

Fire

Gunner announces the shot so the Observer knows when to watch for impact.

04

Correct

Observer gives one clear direction and distance adjustment, or confirms rounds are effective.

05

Stop or shift

Cease fire when friendlies close, the target disappears or a higher-value target is confirmed.

EXAMPLE CREW CALL“Enemy infantry, Observer mark. Friendlies 100 metres south. One round, report impact.”Keep the target, friendly boundary and requested volume in one short message.

TARGET PRIORITY

Fire where the team gains something

  • Confirmed infantry gathering around a defended approach.
  • A marked spawn route or emplacement that blocks the active push.
  • An area the squad needs suppressed during a timed movement.
  • Smoke or explosive support explicitly requested by a leader, when the current loadout provides it.

DO NOT FIRE

Uncertainty is a cease-fire condition

  • The mark is old and nobody can confirm the target remains there.
  • Friendly players are entering or crossing the impact area.
  • The crew cannot distinguish a correction from a new target.
  • Repeated firing is exposing the position without supporting an objective.
Third-party mortar calculators are version-sensitiveDo not copy values from the original Hell Let Loose or an earlier Vietnam build without checking the current in-game scale and aiming interface. This page will add exact tables only after they can be reproduced.

WHEN TO RELOCATE

Move before predictable fire becomes a predictable death

Shift when the active objective moves outside the useful arc, the enemy has located the crew, ammunition support is no longer sustainable, or terrain blocks the next mission. The Observer should identify the next useful area before the Gunner abandons a functioning position.

QUICK ANSWERS

Mortar Squad questions

What are the three Mortar Squad roles in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam?

The published role directory lists Mortar Observer, Mortar Support and Mortar Gunner. The equipment snapshot associates the Observer with a Field Pad and signal flare, Support with supplies and an ammunition box, and Gunner with the mortar-building wrench; exact current quantities still require an in-game check.

Who builds the mortar in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam?

The May 2026 role catalogue places the mortar wrench on the Mortar Gunner and supplies on Mortar Support. Post-launch player reports also describe the Gunner placing the mortar on suitable ground, but the current supply cost and placement restrictions need a launch-build capture before they are stated as fixed values.

How should a Mortar Squad call and correct fire?

Use a short loop: identify the marked target, confirm friendlies are clear, announce the first round, wait for impact, then correct one direction at a time. Stop firing when friendly troops enter the impact area or the target is no longer confirmed.

Does this guide provide exact mortar range or mil values?

No. Community calculators and beta-era tables exist, but this guide does not publish exact range, mil, damage or ammunition values without a reproducible launch-build source. Use the in-game aiming interface and treat third-party calculators as version-sensitive.

What this guide can verify

These guides separate first-party release facts, dated catalogues and observed gameplay behavior. Version-sensitive values or features remain unstated when the current sources do not verify them.
